Dr. Sanjeev Arora Named 2022 New Mexico True Hero

When New Mexico Magazine put out the call for nominations for their annual New Mexico True Heroes awards this year, they found one such hero at the UNM Health Sciences Center.

Nearly 20 years after starting Project ECHO, the unique telementoring model that brings best practice health care to remote and underserved communities in New Mexico and around the world, Sanjeev Arora, MD, is still looking for new ways to serve.

This year’s New Mexico True Heroes issue – and accompanying video – highlights 10 exceptional New Mexicans who have distinguished themselves over the past year by going above and beyond to serve local communities in the areas of health care, education, volunteerism, philanthropy, arts, culture and more. Arora was recognized for his work in transforming health care for rural New Mexicans.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Project ECHO has proven to be a critical resource for health care systems as they worked to rapidly deploy testing, vaccination and treatment.

Arora led ECHO’s significant growth to meet that need, and ECHO and its partners now offer programs across more than 70 disease areas – making access to quality health care more equitable in New Mexico and beyond.

Learn more about how Project ECHO was developed, and about Arora’s commitment to changing the world.
